You know that family member who takes their food to other room to eat it separately from the others?
They might be getting the same food as the rest of the family, but it’s still not the same thing, is it? When it’s meal time, it’s not just about eating.
No matter the reason one might give, it is unhealthy for the soul and body of that family unit when they do not eat together (ever). Interesting how it’s usually the man of the house committing this sin against his home. If that’s you, I pray you’ll give that up today.
It’s not according to design. And who misses out? EVERYONE DOES! You, your children, and your spouse.
The table (or whatever you’re eating around) is a place for sharing, encouraging, affirming, and growing together. Dad leads in prayer (sometimes mom or another kid), and the kids learn from this godly example. Children are given a voice there. Stories of the day are heard, as well as the worries on the mind. Care can be given, and laughs can be heard. While the food is doing the work of nourishing the body, the people are nourishing one another in a deeper way.
There’s a similar problem in the church
The Christian (man or woman) who chooses to not assemble regularly to worship, fellowship, listen and grow with other believers cannot be as healthy as the one who assembles often.
This person is disobedient to God’s clear command. Common sense is being ignored.
You are absolutely correct that a person can read their Bible, sing, and pray without going to a church building. But it’s just not the same, is it? Who’s missing out in this case? EVERYONE!
The body of Christ needs to function in unity. When the spiritual food of the Word is being fed to the local assembly, all should be present and engaged. All should be ready to participate by receiving the Word, praying with and for each other, singing to the Lord, and fellowshipping.
Staying home from church on the regular, and telling yourself that you can do it this way, is no less destructive than that family member who takes his plate to the office to eat.
Every Christian needs the regular fellowship of a healthy church body, submitting to Christ together, and gladly sharing life together.
Go to church this weekend! Stop eating in the other room!
